How to get there, buy tickets, best photo spots and practical tips.
Niutoushan translates as “Ox Head” – the mountain really resembles the head of an ox. Here is one of the oldest Taoist temples in the region, founded more than 1000 years ago. Legend has it that a Taoist hermit meditated here and achieved enlightenment.
- Car: from Shanghai via G60 to Jinhua, then local roads to Niutoushan. GPS coordinates: 28.8567° N, 119.8345° E.
- Train + taxi: from Hongqiao station to Jinhua station (about 2 hours), then taxi about 1.5 hours to the entrance.
- Parking: paid parking at the park entrance (20¥/day).
- Opening hours: 08:00–17:00.
- Mountain ticket: 97¥ (adult), children under 1.2 m free.
- Ritual bell: 20¥ per ring (usually can be arranged for the group).
- Suspension bridges: free, included in the ticket.
- Taoist temple: the main shrine, ancient statues inside.
- Bell tower: ringing the bell brings good luck.
- Suspension bridge: best view of the canyon.
- “Cloud Peak” observation deck: panorama of the whole valley.
- Best time for photos: morning before 10:00 (light hits the temple) or after 15:00 (soft light).
- Footwear: definitely trekking shoes, trails can be slippery.
