Taimushan: Marine Capital of Immortals
Taimushan (太姥山) is a unique geopark known as the “Marine Capital of Immortals”. It is the only place in China where a granite “forest” of peaks meets the East China Sea. The mountain is famous for its 54 sharp peaks, over 100 caves (including the famous “Thread of Heaven” only 20–40 cm wide), and as the birthplace of the renowned white tea Baihao Yinzhen.
We will spend two days here: climb the highest peak, Fuding (917 m), to see the panorama of the sea and islands, explore mysterious caves and labyrinths of giant rocks, visit an ancient temple perched on a cliff, and taste authentic “immortal tea”. Spending the night in the mountains gives you the chance to see sunrise over a sea of clouds.

What to expect
- Day 1: Travel and introduction to the mountains — departure from Shanghai in the morning, 5-6 hours on a high‑speed train to Taimushan station. Arrival, transfer to a hotel right in the mountains. Short evening walk, dinner and rest before the big day.
- Day 2: Main programme (8:00–17:00) — climb to the highest peak Fuding, panorama of the East China Sea and the archipelago.
- Exploration of the stone forest and caves — visit the famous rocks ‘Stone Fish Looking at the Sky’ and ‘Couple’s Peak’. Walk through the labyrinth of caves, including the narrowest section ‘Thread of Heaven’ (20–40 cm wide) and Gourd Cave (requires a flashlight).
- Hanging Copper Temple and ancient temple on the cliff — see the unique temple made of 150 tons of copper and visit the ancient Buddhist temple Pianwa Chansi.
- Tea ceremony and tasting — visit the Baihao Yinzhen tea plantations, taste the famous white tea.
- Return to Shanghai — evening departure by train, arrival around midnight.

💡 Important notes for Taimushan:
- Be sure to bring comfortable, non‑slip shoes (preferably trekking boots) and a flashlight (it’s dark in the caves).
- At the summit it is windy and 5–10°C cooler – a jacket is needed.
- Be prepared to pass through very narrow sections in the caves (down to 20–40 cm).
- The tour is suitable for people with good physical fitness and without claustrophobia. There are routes of different difficulty levels.

Frequently asked questions
How difficult is it?
The park offers various routes: from easy walks to a full 8‑hour trek (19 km). You can choose the difficulty level that suits you, from a leisurely stroll to a serious hike.
Is it scary to go through the narrow caves?
Passing through some caves, especially the ‘Thread of Heaven’, can feel extreme due to their narrowness (only 20–40 cm). However, it is absolutely safe, though it requires some agility. If you have claustrophobia or are unsure, there are always simpler and wider bypass routes.
What should I bring?
Comfortable, non‑slip shoes (preferably trekking boots), a light jacket (windy and cooler at the summit), water, a snack, passport, cash, camera and a flashlight (for the caves). It’s better to take a small backpack to pass through narrow spots more easily.
Why is Taimushan called the ‘Marine Capital of Immortals’?
According to legend, immortals often gathered here to admire the magnificent view of the sea from the heights. Taimushan is considered one of the sacred mountains of China.
Is it necessary to stay in the mountains? Can we return in one day?
Technically possible, but we don’t recommend it. The journey from Shanghai takes ~5 hours, plus time in the park (at least 6-8 hours) – you’ll be exhausted and miss a lot. Overnight stay gives you a chance to rest and see the sunrise over the sea of clouds in the morning.
What is the weather like in Taimushan?
Winter is cool, sometimes snowy; summer is warm, but at the summit it’s always cooler. Best time: April–June (flowers, clouds), September–November (golden autumn, clear skies).
