Tianmuhu (天目湖) – Mountain Lake, Bamboo and Hot Springs

Tianmuhu (天目湖) – a scenic resort area about an hour's drive from Nanjing, known for its clear waters, bamboo forests and hot springs. The main treasures: the lake with boat trips, the giant Nanshan Bamboo Sea with pandas, and the elite Yushui Hot Spring located right in the bamboo forest. It is an ideal place to escape the metropolis.

In one day you can visit the lake (boat ride, islands) and relax in the hot spring. If you stay a second day – immerse yourself in the bamboo forest, take the cable car and see real pandas. The local cuisine is famous for fish head soup in a clay pot – be sure to try it!

Frequently asked questions

How many days is better to take?
If you have limited time, one day is enough for the lake and hot spring. For a full immersion in nature and to visit the bamboo sea with pandas, we recommend two days.
Which transport is better?
Train is the fastest and most economical (≈2.5 h). A car gives freedom and comfort, but the drive takes about 3–3.5 hours one way. Choose according to your preferences.
Do I need to book train tickets in advance?
Yes, especially on weekends and holidays. We can help with purchase or you can do it yourself via the 12306 app.
Is it difficult to walk in the bamboo forest?
The park has a cable car and a train, so physical exertion is minimal. Comfortable shoes are useful for walking along the trails.
Is it suitable for children?
Very suitable: the lake has children's playgrounds, a water park in summer; children love the pandas and the cable car in the bamboo forest.
What food to try?
Definitely order the fish head soup in a clay pot (砂锅鱼头) – the signature dish of Tianmuhu. We also recommend local white tea and bamboo dishes.
