Zhouzhuang - China's Venice
Zhouzhuang is the pearl among China's water towns, famously known as the "Venice of the East." Founded over 900 years ago, it has preserved the spirit of the Ming and Qing dynasties with its arched stone bridges, winding canals, ancient mansions, and quiet alleyways where time seems to have stood still. It is here that you can experience the authentic atmosphere of China, celebrated in poems and paintings.
Main Attractions of Zhouzhuang
What awaits you in Zhouzhuang
- Double Bridge (Shuangqiao). The hallmark of the city — two bridges intersecting at a right angle. I will tell you why they are called the "key to Zhouzhuang" and how they made the city famous worldwide thanks to a painting by artist Chen Yifei.
- Shen Wanshan's Residence. You will visit the mansion of the most famous rich merchant of the Ming era, learn legends about his countless treasures, and get acquainted with the architecture of a traditional Chinese mansion.
- Zhang's House. "A ship on dry land" — this is how this elegant mansion with a winding stream flowing through the entire house is called. You will see how living and water spaces were combined in ancient times.
- Fu'an Bridge Street. The main commercial street of the old town, where time stopped hundreds of years ago. We will walk past traditional shops and try the famous "Wanshan pork knuckle" — a local delicacy.
- Bridges of Zhouzhuang. Of the 14 ancient stone bridges in the city, we will see the most famous ones — Fu'an Bridge with its unique pavilions, the elegant Tongjin Bridge, and the legendary Double Bridge.
- Water arteries. The "circulatory system" of the city — canals forming the character for "well". I will show you how water determines the rhythm of life in Zhouzhuang.
- Boat ride. Finally, we will take a ride on a traditional flat-bottomed boat along the quiet canals to see the reflection of white walls and tiled roofs in the water and feel the true magic of "China's Venice".
- Zhouzhuang at night. If we stay until evening, you will see how the city transforms: red lanterns light up, reflecting in the water, and Zhouzhuang is immersed in an atmosphere of ancient mystery.
